The Choices in Heating and Cooling Systems are Many, But There are Only Two Basic Kinds of Systems to Consider When Buying New Equipment:
A SPLIT SYSTEM
A split system is the most common type of HVAC setup, consisting of an outdoor condensing unit, an indoor furnace, and an evaporator coil. The condensing unit houses the compressor and releases heat outside, while the furnace provides heating by using gas or electricity. The evaporator coil, located inside near the furnace, works with the refrigerant to absorb heat from the air, allowing the system to cool your home efficiently. There are also the smaller, new ductless systems to consider in this category.

A PACKAGED SYSTEM
A packaged system is an all-in-one heating and cooling solution where all essential components—the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, and furnace or air handler—are housed in a single outdoor unit. Typically installed on a roof or a concrete slab next to the home, this space-saving system is ideal for homes without the indoor space for a separate furnace and coil. Packaged systems deliver both heating and cooling efficiently, making them a great option for homeowners looking for convenience, easy installation, and reliable year-round comfort.

Then There’s the Fuel Source
You may not have a choice about that, but if you do, we can talk you through oil, natural gas, and more. The old oil furnaces that last 40 to 50 years (and have no energy efficiency) may no longer exist, but your heating and cooling system should last around 15 to 20 years.
Some systems allow you to claim a tax credit for the purchase and installation of Qualified Energy Property. And then there are the numbers. In addition to AFUE, different units have SEER numbers (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), and HSPF numbers (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor).

All of these details can become a confusing maze of too much information. Please feel free to contact us with your questions!
Any homeowner should really think about the initial investment, the energy efficiency, the required maintenance, and the warranty all together when making your decision. That’s where the experts at Custom Home Heating can really help. If you’re building, we can meet with you at whatever stage you’re in, from design to construction, to talk through the heating and cooling possibilities. If you’re replacing, we come out to your home, examine the indoor space and outside geography, as well as the current system, to give you our best advice. Initial consultation is free, so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by talking with us.
The Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) of any system must be 80% to comply with current regulations, and if you have a system that is older than 10 years, chances are that it falls below that level. When we come out to your home to give you a quote, we perform a Manual J load calculation to find out the system size you need (measured in BTUs or tons). This calculation takes your entire home into account — from square footage to window efficiency to external geography.
